The Stress That Heals: The Four Quadrants of Hormesis

What if the right kind of stress is one of the most powerful medicines we have? Why do heat and cold appear to make us biologically younger — and how much is the right dose? And with cold plunges and fasting apps now everywhere, how do we separate what genuinely works from what is simply on trend?

Few people are better placed to answer than Dr Jane Lovell — a specialist remote and emergency medicine physician and a commissioned Naval Medical Officer in the Royal Australian Navy. She has practised in some of the most demanding environments there are: as the sole doctor aboard Australian warships deployed across the Indo-Pacific, in remote outback emergency departments, and currently on maritime patrols at sea with the Australian Border Force.

Between deployments, Dr Lovell is the Founder and Medical Director of HealthLifeSpan, a physician-led longevity medicine practice in Melbourne, built on a simple idea: that ageing is now something we can measure, and meaningfully influence. A Fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, with postgraduate training in public health and health management and a Harvard Business School scholarship in value-based healthcare, she has spent fifteen years across the full breadth of Australian medicine — emergency, rural, military and health-system leadership.

Her talk introduces The Four Quadrants of Hormesis — her own framework, and one of the cornerstones of how HealthLifeSpan turns longevity science into everyday practice. It maps four levers of controlled, beneficial stress — thermal, metabolic, physical and cognitive — that can be dosed like medicine to extend not just lifespan, but the years we stay strong and well. It is a session she first delivered to her own crew at sea, to a notably enthusiastic reception.

In this conversation, Dr Lovell will unpack what the evidence actually shows about “good stress,” challenge the assumption that comfort is always the goal, and offer a practical framework for putting it to work — safely, and at the right dose.

Expect a fascinating and practical discussion, followed by the opportunity to ask Dr Lovell your own questions
